When Bernie Sanders suspended his run for President today, it reminded me of an old movie. Ann-Margret became a star when she sang Bye Bye Birdie in the 1963 film with the same title. In the first seconds of the film, we learn that teen idol rock musician Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson) has been drafted and will be heading off to military service. Ann-Margret sings her heart out in the opening of the film as she says “goodbye” to Conrad Birdie.
I thought you might enjoy the song as a tribute to Bernie. I’ve only changed two words in the lyrics: the words Conrad and Birdie both become Bernie in the version below. Just image that instead of Ann-Marget, it’s AOC singing the song. Enjoy.
Bye Bye Bernie
We love you, Bernie
Oh, yes we do
We love you, Bernie
And we will be too
Bye bye Bernie
I’m gonna miss you so
Bye bye Bernie
Why’d ya have to go?
(We love you, Bernie)
No more sunshine
It’s followed you away
I’ll cry Bernie
Till you’re home to stay
I’ll miss the way you smile
As though it’s just for me
And each and every night
I’ll write you faithfully
(Bye bye Bernie )
Bye bye Bernie
It’s awful hard to bear
Bye bye Bernie
Guess I’ll always care
We love you, Bernie
Oh, yes we do
We love you, Bernie
And we will be too
I’ll miss the way you smile
As though it’s just for me
And each and every night
I’ll write you faithfully
Bye bye Bernie
It’s awful hard to bear
Bye bye Bernie
Guess I’ll always care
(We love you, Bernie)
Guess I’ll always care
(We love you, Bernie)
Guess I’ll always care
(We love you, Bernie)
Guess I’ll always care
