Maybe President Trump should be impeached and removed from office. I’ve spent the day watching impeachment proceedings, and I must say that much of the intellectual consensus points to the likelihood that the President did horrible things such as bribery, abuse of power, obstruction of justice, and putting puppies and kittens in a burlap bag and throwing them down a well.
Okay, let me be honest. I made up the part about the cute little kittens and puppies and the well. It was the Democrats who made up the parts about bribery, obstruction of justice, and burning the constitution.
Let me be clear. I’m not against President Trump being impeached and removed from office. All I need is clear and compelling evidence that he did something that is so wrong that no reasonable person would argue the issue. Instead, what I’ve heard is the testimony of three constitutional scholars who say no evidence is needed and no facts need to be produced because the President is obviously guilty of grave and hideous crimes. Even worse, according to Stanford Law Professor and scholar Pamela Karlan, there’s proof that the President wants to be named King because his thirteen year-old son is named Barron.
The Republicans have made the unreasonable request that evidence of wrongdoing be produced.
During the hearings, the fourth constitutional scholar to testify, Jonathan Turley of George Washington University Law School, said that it’s possible that the President did something wrong, but it appears that the standards for impeachment are more than inadequate:
“One can oppose President Trump’s policies or actions but still conclude that the current legal case for impeachment is not just woefully inadequate, but in some respects, dangerous, as the basis for the impeachment of an American president. I am concerned about lowering impeachment standards to fit a paucity of evidence and an abundance of anger. If the House proceeds solely on the Ukrainian allegations, this impeachment would stand out among modern impeachments as the shortest proceeding, with the thinnest evidentiary record, and the narrowest grounds ever used to impeach a president.” — Jonathan Turley
Turley concluded that if an impeachment is imminent, those wishing to take down the President should produce witnesses to testify that he truly abused power and did wrong — not that they’re pretty sure he did something that they can’t quite prove:
“My objection is that there is a constant preference for inference over information — for presumptions over proof. That’s because the record hasn’t been developed. And if you’re going to remove a President — if you believe in democracy — if you remove a sitting President, then you have an obligation not to rely on inference when there’s still information you can gather. And that’s what I’m saying, it’s not that you can’t do this. You just can’t do it this way.” — Jonathan Turley
Professor Turley made the point that those wishing to impeach the President had the opportunity to subpoena those who know the facts. They had the opportunity to subpoena those who could tell the truth. They chose not to.
Why?
Simply because the truth does not support impeachment.
However, I’m looking forward to a trial in the Senate.
Will Adam Schiff testify? I doubt it. He’ll find an excuse not to. But won’t that be telling?
Will the Bidens testify? I doubt it. But won’t that be telling?
All I’m suggesting is that a President who was elected by the American people should not be impeached and removed from office simply because he’s not comfortably settled in the swamp. Those members of the House of Representatives are supposed to REPRESENT the people. If our representatives are going to negate the wishes of the people who elected a President, they have the responsibility to PROVE that something wrong was done. They should either call witnesses who can testify first-hand to the crimes they insist happened, or they should find another job.
I know that it’s unreasonable, but show me the evidence.
I support President Trump. Prove to me that he committed “high crimes and misdemeanors” and I’ll support impeachment. Give me real proof. I dare you!
