In the unlikely event that you are fortunate enough to know one of the brave soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy seventy-five years ago today, be sure to say “thank you!”
The youngest of the men are in their 90’s. There are fewer and fewer of them.
I regret that American history is not taught in many schools. I’m not sure that the children of the current generation understand or care about the sacrifices made by those of the “greatest generation.”
If you know about the Normandy invasion, you understand that valiant Americans saved Europe from becoming a Nazi continent.
But they did something else that no one speaks of.
Had the Americans not invaded Europe, indeed, Europe would have been controlled by the Nazis. But, eventually, the Soviet Union might well have defeated Hitler without the help of Allied forces. It would have taken longer and been a difficult war. But in the case of a Soviet victory, all of Europe would be under the control of the Soviet Union and Communism. Either way, it would have been a very different and much more horrible world.
History matters.
So, if you can, please say “thank you” to one of the heroes who helped save the world from Nazism and Communism. If you can’t, be sure to say “thank you” to any veteran. They’ve all served and sacrificed to keep you free.
