Should we celebrate Independence Day, the Fourth of July?
All of the fireworks mean something. Fireworks are symbolic of many things. One of those being the cannons, rifles and rockets that helped America gain freedom from Great Britain.
The Declaration of Independence is dated July 4th, 1776 and celebrates the beginning of a new nation, independent of Great Britain and the tyranny it represented to the thirteen colonies.
Most people don’t know that John Adams insisted that fireworks be a part of our national celebration of independence even before the signing of the document. On the night of July 4, 1777, one year after the great document became a part of history, America’s first Independence Day celebrations were held — and there were fireworks!
But there’s an important question to ask in light of the current political situation in which statues of the founding fathers are being destroyed because of ties to slavery and racism.
Should the United States have declared itself free and independent of Great Britain? Should there be an Independence Day?
Here’s why. If you agree with progressive and liberals, The Declaration of Independence may not be a legitimate document. Thirty-four of the forty-seven founding fathers who signed the Declaration were slaveholders. Should we value the input of racist slaveholders? If they were for independence, shouldn’t we be against it? After all, how can the United State of America be based on a document signed by a large majority of racists?
Is it possible that we should tell Great Britain that we made a mistake and we want them to take us back again as a colony under the wing of its great empire? What other choice is there?
And what about the Constitution of the United States, which guarantees us free speech, free press, the right to bear arm, the right to a fair trail, and freedom of peaceful assembly? Shouldn’t we negate that too? After all, almost half of the 55 men who attended the first constitutional convention were slaveholders. Also, not a single signer of the Declaration of Independence or the United States Constitution was a woman. Not only are they racist documents, but also sexist.
As I see it, we only have two choices. We can accept the progressive notion that the United States was built on racism, sexism, and ill-conceived revolution, and therefore must be destroyed bit by bit until nothing is left of the founding father’s vision for this country. On the other hand, we can accept the conservative view that the the founding father’s, although very imperfect, lived in a different time with different values, different views on race and sex, and that they founded a country with a constitution that would allow the new country to grow and become more perfect over time.
If you agree with the progressives, it’s time to forget the backyard barbecues and fireworks as you take a break from toppling statues and burning flags.
If you’re on the conservative side, you’ll be with me in celebrating the greatness of the United States of America as we watch fireworks and work to make this country even greater and more perfect.
Happy Independence Day!
